GAT Syllabus

1. Communication Ability & English Comprehension (40 Questions)

This is the biggest section, and honestly, it’s where many students either score big or crash hard. Topics include:

Reading comprehension passages
Synonyms and antonyms
Idioms and phrases
Sentence correction and grammar
Verbal reasoning
Vocabulary in context
One-word substitutions

Tip: If you’re not a regular reader, start now. Read design magazines, fashion blogs, and editorial columns. It’ll help with both comprehension and GK.

2. Quantitative Ability (20 Questions)

Before you panic — this is Class 10 level math. Nothing fancy.

Basic arithmetic (fractions, decimals, percentages)
Profit and loss, simple interest
Ratio and proportion
Time, speed, and distance
Work and time problems
Data interpretation (basic graphs and tables)
Simple algebra

Tip: If you’re from an arts background, don’t skip this section. It’s actually the most scorable part of GAT because the concepts are fixed and repetitive. Six weeks of focused practice can get you 15+ marks here

3. Analytical & Logical Ability (15 Questions)

Coding-decoding
Blood relations
Series completion (number and alphabet)
Seating arrangements
Analogies
Pattern recognition
Syllogisms
Visual logic and figure-based reasoning

4. General Knowledge & Current Affairs (25 Questions)

This section separates the prepared from the lucky-guessers. Topics include:

National and international current affairs
Indian art, culture, and heritage
Fashion industry knowledge (designers, brands, fashion weeks)
Sports, awards, and honors
Basic science and technology
Environmental awareness
Books and authors
Important days and events

Tip: Follow fashion news actively. Know who won the International Woolmark Prize, which Indian designer showcased at Paris Fashion Week, and what sustainability means in today’s fashion context.

CAT Syllabus

The CAT doesn’t have a fixed “syllabus” in the traditional sense because it’s a creative test. But here’s what you’re expected to demonstrate:

1. Design Theory & Visualization

Understanding of design elements (line, shape, form, texture, space)
Principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, rhythm, unity)
Visual logic and spatial reasoning

2. Colour Terminology & Application

Colour theory (primary, secondary, tertiary colors)
Colour harmony and contrast
Warm and cool colors
Optical illusions involving color
Theme-based color usage

3. Observation & Design Development

Drawing from memory (everyday objects, scenes, people)
Concept development from a given theme
Innovation and originality in design solutions
Storytelling through visuals

4. Drawing & Illustration Skills

Human figure sketching (proportion, posture, movement)
Perspective drawing (one-point, two-point)
Product illustration
Doodling and imaginative composition
Use of different mediums (pencil, color pencils, watercolors, markers)

5. Creativity & Originality

This is the X-factor. NIFT evaluators have seen thousands of sheets. What makes yours stand out? Original thinking, unexpected ideas, and the ability to communicate a concept clearly through visuals.

Situation Test Syllabus (Stage 2)

The Situation Test evaluates:

3D Model Making: Creating structures from given materials
Material Handling: Smart use of limited resources
Color Sense: Aesthetic appeal of the final model
Concept Explanation: How well you articulate your idea
Innovation: Uniqueness of your solution
